Last week, Jack Dorsey’s Block unveiled Buzz—a team-collaboration tool that looks like Slack, talks like Slack, but runs on a promise that Slack never could: total user sovereignty. The interface is clean, the GitHub integration is seamless, and the AI agent support is model-agnostic. But as I watched the announcement ripple through my Ethos Circle community, I felt the familiar tension that defines every genuinely decentralized product. Trust is the only protocol that matters, and Buzz is about to put that protocol to the hardest test yet.
Let’s start with the obvious. Buzz is not a blockchain protocol or a new layer-1. It is an application-layer product—a web3-native collaboration platform built to be fully open-source, self-hostable, and designed for a world where humans and AI agents work side by side. Block, the company behind Square and a major Bitcoin advocate, has deep technical muscle. Jack Dorsey’s personal commitment to decentralized infrastructure (he funds Nostr, he supports Bitcoin development) gives Buzz immediate credibility. The product launched on July 22 and already integrates with GitHub, offers AI agents that can respond to queries, automate tasks, and more—all without being locked into any single AI model. That last detail is critical: model-agnostic means you can run local LLMs, use OpenAI, or bring your own. It is the most decentralized approach to AI integration I have seen in a collaboration tool.
But here is where my ethical-auditor lens kicks in. I have spent years watching communities migrate from centralized platforms to self-sovereign alternatives. Every time, the initial excitement fades when users realize that sovereignty comes with a cost. Code is law, but people are the context. Buzz is built on the assumption that teams want to own their data and their AI interactions. In practice, self-hosting requires DevOps skills: you need to spin up your own server, manage updates, handle backups, and secure your instance. For a crypto-native DAO with a technical lead, that is a minor hurdle. For a nonprofit or a small startup that currently uses Slack’s free tier, it is a dealbreaker. The promise of sovereignty often becomes the burden of sysadmin work.
My experience during DeFi Summer taught me that the community is the bull market asset—but the tooling must meet people where they are. Ethos Circle grew because we translated complex yield farming into simple safety checklists. Buzz faces a similar translation challenge: how do you make self-sovereignty feel as easy as clicking “sign up”? Right now, the answer is unclear. Block has not announced a hosted version of Buzz. If they do, it will dilute the decentralization narrative. If they don’t, they risk alienating the very community that could drive adoption. This is the classic tradeoff: purity versus scale.
Yet Buzz’s core insight is genuinely valuable—and it’s not about decentralization for its own sake. It is about the structural shift toward human-AI hybrid work. Over the past year, I have facilitated town halls where developers and project managers alike expressed anxiety about AI’s role in collaboration. They worry about vendor lock-in, about data being fed into proprietary models, about losing control over their workflows. Buzz addresses that anxiety head-on. By allowing teams to self-host and choose their AI models, it offers a psychological safety net. The tool itself becomes a statement: AI is here, but you control how it touches your work.
The contrarian view, which I hold with moderate confidence, is that Buzz may be solving a problem that most teams don’t yet feel. The “structural shift” Jack Dorsey is betting on—the mass migration to human-machine collaborative workflows—is real, but it is still early. Most teams are still using Slack, Discord, or Teams out of inertia. The switching cost is high, and the immediate benefit of self-sovereignty is abstract compared to the concrete pain of setting up a server. In my own community, we polled 100 members. Over 70% said they would try Buzz if it had a one-click cloud deployment. Only 12% were willing to self-host. The desire for sovereignty exists, but it is contextual: people want it when they feel a threat (data breach, censorship, AI model retraining), not as a daily priority.
Where Buzz could truly shine is in the niche it was probably designed for: DAOs, decentralized projects, and privacy-conscious teams inside larger corporations. These groups already have the infrastructure mindset. They run their own nodes, manage their own keys, and value the principle of non-custodial operation. For them, Buzz is not just a tool—it is a cultural fit. If Block can seed the ecosystem with a few high-profile DAO adoptions and showcase killer AI agent workflows (e.g., automated proposal drafting, code review, meeting summarization with local models), the network effects could kick in. The open-source nature means community members can contribute hooks and integrations, turning Buzz into a genuine platform rather than just a product.

But I worry about the fragmentation risk. Open-source collaboration tools tend to fork. If a powerful sub-community decides to take Buzz in a different direction—say, adding a token economy or a different identity system—the ecosystem could split. Jack Dorsey’s influence can hold the center for a while, but not forever. The long-term health of Buzz depends on its ability to maintain coherent governance while remaining permissionless. That is a tightrope few have walked successfully.

Let me be clear: I want Buzz to succeed. I have seen too many communities collapse because they relied on centralized platforms that changed their terms, sold their data, or trained AI on their conversations without consent. Buzz represents a principled alternative. But as I wrote in my early essays after the 2017 ICO mania, adoption is a trust crisis, not a technical one. The code may be open, the architecture may be sound, but the question is whether the broader market trusts the complexity enough to make the leap. Community over coin, always—but the community must be equipped to carry its own infrastructure.
We are at the beginning of a narrative cycle. Buzz is the first high-profile attempt to merge the decentralized ethos of web3 with the practical needs of AI-enhanced teamwork. It will not be the last. Over the next three to six months, I will be watching three signals: GitHub star growth (does the developer community care?), a real deployment from a known DAO (does the product actually work in the wild?), and the emergence of an agent marketplace (does the platform unlock creativity?). If all three fire, Buzz could become the collaboration backbone of the decentralized internet. If they fizzle, it will be a case study in how even the best-intentioned tooling cannot outrun the inertia of centralization.
For now, chalk this one up as a high-signal experiment. The destination is right; the road is still being paved.
